You feel better, although you can still feel the bruise on the side of your face if you touch it. You thank Maria as best you can and, without seeming to defensive, try to position yourself between her and Ted. If he freaks out again you'd rather take the hit yourself than let this frail, older woman get hurt.
You watch as Maria tries to open the chest, if she fails, you give it a go. If she succeeds than you simply follow her down the path.
You also take this time to look around once again for anything that could be used as medical supplies, you get the feeling you'll need as much as you can if you plan on hanging around with these people.

Ted quickly acquires the chocolate bunny and the bucket that fell off his head from being tackled. Oh, precious bucket, what would we ever do without you? Maybe it should be given to Jim. You know, to thwart whatever blunt instrument smacked him upside the head. Yeah, that's a great idea! Jim is sure to appreciate this gift of--

Wait. It's starting to come back. No, this bucket isn't friendly at all! It gave absolutely no protection when Ted needed it most! Why, if it had, Ted never would have...

    ..oh.

The realization hits like a bag of sand. Ted. It was all Ted. He was the aggressor. He was the monster. He was the blunt instrument.

"It is not meant for you, girl," a voice rings ethereally through Ted's mind. You know what, voice? You're absolutely right.

Trying not to cry, Ted drops the bucket and runs alone into the fields. He needs to protect the others from what could be the most dangerous thing on the island: himself.

The buddy system cannot be compromised. But a monster like Ted does not deserve the buddy system. And the buddy system does not deserve him.

"No coins," warn the voices in the Cardinal's head. "That's cheating."

The Cardinal jumps back in shock for a minute, then looks around for the strange voices. He thinks he notices someone off to the south.

(someone off in the distance perhaps? either a person or a lizardman. best to leave here quickly. people are not to be trusted and neither are lizardmen.)

(very hungry though. consider eating a lizardman if encountered.)

The Cardinal turns back to the transmutation device.

(hmm, enough time to mess with strange machine, maybe it will give some food.)

The Cardinal grabs his coin off the platform. He tears some grass out of the ground and (if successful) transmutes it with the laser pointer. As he reaches down he notices 3 coins in the grass and takes them without thinking about it at all.

  4. ((Pfft poor Trace. Yeah Nicki's not one to beat around the bush if something needs to be done.))

So maybe The Cardinal had been around here? It looked like someone had been.

You kneel down to get a better look at the chest. What could the number 3 mean?

After examining the chest, you try to open it.

    > "So," you say to Nikki as you 1) help her open the chest. "It appears as though the Paranoiac has gone through here. Do you want to go after him? We could use the help."

You also 2) consult your intuition to see whether or not you should go after said Paranoiac._

    MARIA GRACE ROBINSON
Open chest: You try to pry it open but fail to do so. "Not for you, either," the Voice whispers through your (and Jim's) head.
Move north: You start north on the path, cutting a clear way through the tall, waving grass. Far to the north there is something large and unidentifiable.

    JIM
Open chest: You fail to open the chest. The Voice is silent now, but you get the feeling that somewhere, someone is laughing at you. You then follow Maria north.
Find medical supplies: You find nothing. The feeling of remote mockery grows stronger.

    TED
Try not to cry: You start crying big baby tears. It's very embarrassing for everyone.
Drop bucket: It drops into the sand with a dramatic thump. It looks very symbolic, lodged there in the sand.
Run into field: You run north into the tall grass. You're...not really that far from Maria and Jim, you're just not on the path like they are. (You are, in fact, running parallel to the path, slightly to its west.)
    You have received 1 coin.

    NASTALYA VANDERBRAUM
No actions taken. Nastalya remains behind on the beach, near the chest. (Skipped.)

    THE CARDINAL
Tear up grass: You tear up a handful of grass.
Transmute: The two platforms containing grass and the laser pointer descend into the machine. Once more there is a loud hum, and the center platform emerges carrying a fist-sized ball woven from dead grass. It glows a bright red and gives off a fair bit of warmth.

    NICKI DURANTE
Examine chest: You take a closer look at the chest. Curiously, the plate with the number seems...newer than the rest of it.
Open chest: Through sheer strength and grit, you manage to pry open the chest. It's filled with...ham? Sliced ham, cubed ham, glazed whole hams, even the occasional slice of prosciutto. It's enough to feed a whole village for a week! But, somehow, you feel as if your well-won prize doesn't quite...belong to you. Well, no matter! The chest disappears into your inventory, but you can call it back into the physical plane at any time.

    GAMBLER TRACE BELLAMY
Help open chest: You give Nicki a little bit of help, but ultimately the chest is her prize.
Consult intuition: You try, but your mind feels a little bit scrambled. Perhaps it's best if you leave the 'Paranoiac' to his business.

Maria looks worriedly after Ted as he runs off. She hopes that the man, strange as he is, will be alright. Shaking her head she makes sure Jim is coming along and heads through the small underbrush surrounding the path she had decided to take.

As Maria makes her way along the path she keeps an eye out for anything interesting. Eventually she spots something large further ahead. She looks at the Russian boy, nodding at him to folow, and heads towards what seems like a struture.

Oh, blessed rain! Cover Ted's face with your tears, so that his own may be hidden! Oh, blessed sun! Take your light below the horizon so that none may see his sorrow! No one may see him this way, in this emotional state. Anyone who would do so may think him...human. But Ted is nothing more than a monster. A savage beast. All must beware.

At least, Ted thinks so, not realizing Jim and Maria are like, right there.

Nonetheless, Ted is determined to live in seclusion, at least for now, praying that one day he will regain control and that the others might forgive him. So, for a life of solitude, he's gonna need--wait.

Ted stands motionless. What's that...that smell? Could it be...the sultry aroma of beef and BBQ sauce marinated in seawater? No, no...something else...something familiar...

    Ham.

Ham. Ham ham ham. Ham ham ham ham ham. Ham ham...ham. Ham ham. Ham ham ham ham?

Ham, ham ham ham ham. Ham. Ham ham ham.

    "HAM!"

Ham ham ham ham ham ham ham. Ham ham ham. Ham ham ham ham.

Ham ham, ham ham ham ham ham ham ham ham. Ham ham ham ham. Ham ham. Ham ham. Ham...ham.

Ham ham ham ham ham ham.

    Ham.
  10. That was...weird. Well, just as weird as anything else that's been happening on this island. You can't help but wonder who the chest was really meant for. You don't put too much thought into it though, for now the chest is yours.

"Thanks Trace. Looks like we got plenty of food now."

You stand back up and mark the location of the chest on your map. You're not sure exactly how far it is from all the other stuff, so you just put it in what you think would be the general area.

"I dunno if we should keep moving through the plains or not...how far does this even go?"

You scan the horizon to see if anything stands out.

"Course I guess that means if we do keep going it wouldn't be to hard to get ba...uh...do you hear something?"

You swore you heard someone yell just then.

    > Yes, it probably is for the best to leave the paranoid one alone. People like that do not generally enjoy the company of others.

In any case, you now have enough food to last you for a while. However, you suspect that the real prize has yet to be found. With that in mind, you say "Perhaps we should begin to take a look around, right?"

However, when Nikki points out the sound a few seconds later, you 1) Pause to try and see if you can make out what it's saying.

"Yes," you say. "And if I'm not wrong it sounds as though it's...getting louder?"

Worried, you decide to 2) take a combat stance, although in your case you're more used to flight than fight._

"It is not meant for you, girl,"

A shudder goes up Nastalya's spine and for the first time since arriving on the island, she gazes off into space in shock. This isn't the first time she's heard voices in her head, those of the psychic races of aliens that once invaded Earth. A war she was a veteran of, shaping her from a disciplined, yet naive rooky into the hardened war hero she was today. No physical enemy has ever scared Nastalya, but many times she's fallen prey to these psychic aliens, and at times even had her hand forced into killing her own friends. One of her squadmates gained psychic powers during the war, and would prank everyone by speaking directly into their minds, but Nastalya always took it seriously and her squadmate learned to stop. They fought together in the last battle. After the war ended, she thought the aliens were gone for good, but clearly they are back.

Nastalya scans everywhere, trying to find even the slightest hint of movement, while adopting a pose ready to fight. If she sees nothing, she fights against the voices and forces the chest open.

The Cardinal picks up the grass lamp and stares into it for a moment.

    (edible??? hmm)

The Cardinal waves it in front of his birds, who only look at it with only the slightest interest.

(probably not. getting dark out. don't eat lamp until morning.)

The Cardinal rips some grass out of the ground and tries to eat it. He looks around the area to find anything of interest before the sun goes down, then attempts to fall asleep behind the transmutation machine.

    MARIA GRACE ROBINSON
Keep an eye out: You find a bit of hair ribbon caught in a few stalks of grass. It is yellow with pink polka dots.
Head toward structure: You keep north on the path. You're about halfway to the structure, which begins to look like a large building, with what appear to be some statues in front.
    You have received 5 coins.

    JIM
Follow Maria: You follow Maria toward the large building.
Search for medical supplies: You find a piece of gum. Probably not very useful in an emergency situation.
You have received 8.25 fl oz Muscle Milk light chocolate nutritional shake.

    TED
Ham: You follow the sweet siren song of ham, coming very near to Trace and Nicki. But...where is the ham?
    You have received 3 coins.

    NASTALYA VANDERBRAUM
Scan surroundings: In your panicked state your vision goes a bit blurry, and you can't seem to get a proper read on your surroundings.
Take a combat stance: You do so, looking quite fearsome. You'd make a formidable enemy to any human around.
Force open chest: You come quite close, but fail again to open the chest. The Voice whips through your head with a calm furiousness. "Insolent girl. I have no patience for this. You will follow the rules." In an instant you find yourself vanished from the beach, and thrown into what appears to be an abandoned house. It is mid-sized, dark, and falling apart.
You have received 1 serving Dannon Activia Harvest Picks mixed berries yogurt.

    THE CARDINAL
Look around: You find a lemon lodged in the dirt. It looks pretty fresh.
Fall asleep: You curl up behind the transmutation machine, and its continuous hum and warmth promptly put you to sleep.
You have received .5 cups Nash Brothers fruit & nut natural granola.

    NICKI DURANTE
Mark location of chest: You mark something, but it's not very...correct. Not that you notice.
Scan horizon: Obtuse girl, you fail to notice Ted drawing near. Good thing he isn't dangerous...right?
You have received...a map. Unfortunately it is not a map of this particular island, but a map of downtown Moscow. Also, it is in Russian.

    GAMBLER TRACE BELLAMY
Make out shouting: It's crystal-clear: the voice is shouting "ham", repeatedly, and with an obsessive fervor, like a man witnessing the death of his lover. It is the most beautiful and terrifying thing you've ever seen.
Take a combat stance: You bravely assume what you think to be a proper combat stance. It's suitable.
    You have received a blowdryer.

Maria stops on her tracks for a moment, staring at the hair ribbon she found. Its pastel colouring feel eerily familiar to her. "I... had one very much like this back in the day", she reminisces out loud to herself, "Polka dots... I am so very glad they keep coming back into fashion. I am quite fond of the design."

HAM HAM HAM HAM HAM HAM HAM ham ham ham...ham ham....ham.....

The smell isn't so strong anymore, but Ted is absolutely certain there was ham nearby. A lot of ham. The scent dissipated quickly--almost as if it were whisked off into another plane of existence--but it WAS here.

Was the island...taunting him? Dangling a prize in front of him, only to pull it away forever before it could be reached?

Nightfall. Ted notices a flickering light off in the distance...through his own eyes or only in his mind? Unimportant. Ted resolves to get down to the bottom of this mystery, if only to spite whatever unseen forces are at play.

Fueled by adrenaline, Ted fights off sleep, and using whatever clues remain--whatever scents still linger in the air--he tries to locate the source of the ham smell.

This is the mission that matters most, now. Stay awake. Defeat the island. Find the ham.
  18. So there's totally no one on the horizon. You would have seen them, right?

You now notice that Trace has assumed a sort of combat stance. "Uh, what are you doin. What's up, did you hear something?"

The Cardinal sees some sort of yellow object lodged in the dirt in front of him. He takes it, stares at it a second, and then passes out.

The Cardinal wakes up in a strange pile of sticks. Something seems off. He looks at his hands to find they have been replaced with read feathery wings! The Cardinal instantly knows how to fly. He flies upwards, high above the island, until he is above the clouds. Here he finds a golden gate adorned with statues of birds. At the entrance is a bird who introduces himself as Saint Parrot and welcomes the Cardinal to bird heaven. The Cardinal walks through the gate into bird heaven where the buildings are made out of bread and the streets are paved with breadcrumbs. All the birds chirp at him as he passes along the road on the way to the bird throne to take his place as eternal birdlord. But just as the Cardinal reaches the divine birdthrone he hears a hissing noise behind him. He turns around and watches in horror as the sky darkens, the bread all catches fire, and the birds all shed their feathers to reveal undead lizard skeletons with long prehensile tounges. He flies out over the golden gate which has now turned to iron and down below the clouds while the flying lizard skeletons give chase. Down below is his old high school and the Cardinal is pretty sure he forgot to turn in an assignment earlier today. There is no time to lose. The Cardinal gets in his car and tries to drive home but the car slips and spins 360 degrees a hundred times until it hits 5 other cars at once. Then he notices that all other drivers are lizard skeleton illumnati and also are his dad. Dad starts berating him for not making the football team. The Cardinal angrily jumps on his dad and starts pecking at his face but it's no use, dad is too powerful. Dad kicks the Cardinal off a cliff where he falls into a vast labyrinth. He cannot find the exit and the walls all have his old boss's face taunting him forever. The Cardinal looks back at his arms and realizes he has become a pumpkin.

The Cardinal desperately tries to wake up.
