You place a couple of your coins on the nearest blackjack table and dust off the hand that's still lying face down in front of the players seat.
You feel a little silly for this, and try to laugh it off as a joke, but you can't stop yourself. You look at the cards.
You're not really sure what you expected to happen, but you can't really look away.
"Hit me." You say, to absolutely no one.

Ted waits for the duo he's found to respond to his offer. They do not respond right away. Instead, they give him an incredulous stare. It's almost as if they didn't understand him. Maybe English isn't these guys' first language, either.

"Uh...you got coins too?" says Tatiana at last. Dammit! There's no way they'd offer up a commodity as precious as ham for something they already have. And, to be quite frank, everything else in Ted's inventory is pretty much junk. What else did he have that they could possibly...wait, what did she just say?

"We actually just found an entire chest of ham."

An...entire chest? The mere thought of such a thing, in such a place as this...! Ted tries not to drool too visibly.

"I don't know what's going on here," she continues, "but I think someone's messin with us."

"What was your first clue, Madame?" interjects the nearby man. "Was it the plane disappearing or the disembodied voices?"

Oh god. That accent. Ted hopes he isn't Parisian.

He turns to address Ted. "So, Monsieur," he says, "do you wish to join our group? We're heading for the east of the island right now and we could always use another head."

Ted thinks this over. These guys don't exactly seem to be the master conspirators he had initially made them out to be. The woman looks like a fast runner, at least, but if it ever came down to fighting for their lives against whatever beings or beasts were on this island, they'd probably be pretty boned. And if they were working against the others, someone should keep an eye on them anyway. In any case, Ted decides it's probably best if he tags along. (Plus, you know...keep close to the ham.)

Ted stands up straight and brushes some of the dust off his t-shirt. A single word is printed across the chest: "TED".

    "ONWARDS."

That French guy really better not be Parisian.

Ted attempts to form an alliance with Nicki, not knowing that doing so will surely result in disaster. If the results make it clear that he cannot have more than two alliances, or if it just makes more sense that he somehow knows this already (up to inex), Ted breaks his alliance with Jim to allow for this new team-up.

Alright, I suppose it's time to venture forth.

Nastalya leaves the cabin, and spends as much time as she can exploring the immediate vicinity.
  5. Alright so...this guy probably isn't too dangerous. Probably. You guess as long as you don't get him mad somehow he'll be alright to have around.
Uh...did he just start drooling? Does he like ham? Maybe you'll give him some later. You've never really liked ham that much. Definitely not a chest worth. It might make him more willing to trust you too.

    "ONWARDS."

Oh, later though. Looks like he's got somewhere in mind to go...or not. Can't really tell. But either way going somewhere is better than staying put.
    You follow TED.

You also form an alliance with Ted, if able. And while you're at it you attempt to form an alliance with Trace.
  6. Triangle Man

    > You notice the overweight man drooling at the mention of ham, leaving you with further questions about his sanity. The fact that he gives you a look of mild disgust whenever you open your mouth does not help. Still, it's one more useful ally for whatever else lurks on this Island, so you can't complain that much.

    "Onwards."

And he's also loud, how charming. Regardless, it's probably best to 1) follow wherever this man is going and 2) steer Ted in the direction that you wish to go if need be.

After a few seconds, however, you begin to have a weird feeling in your head, which you promptly 1) attempt to shut out through nothing more than force of will. You do not wish to have a migraine right now.

    (sorry for the wait!)

    MARIA GRACE ROBINSON
Clear dust: The air miraculously clears around you.
Open door: You go through the door into some sort of office. There are a few desks, filing cabinets, a safe, and some haphazard stacks of paper and receipts. There is a schedule on a whiteboard on the far wall, but most of the writing has been wiped away. On the largest desk is a leatherbound journal.
You have received 8 fl oz Ocean Spray Cran-Energy cranberry pomegranate energy juice drink.

    JIM
Take hand: You place down two of your coins and look at the hand. There is a 5, face down, and a 10, face up.
Hit me: Something like a breeze blows a card onto your hand; it is a 6. The dealer's hand, opposite you, turns over to reveal a 4, a 3, an ace, and a king. When you glance at the two coins you'd placed on the table, you find that there are now four there for you.

    TED
Don't drool: Drool pours out of your mouth. Just, gallons of it.
Form alliance with Nicki: As soon as the thought enters your head you are filled with a sense of dread. The mysterious voice thunders across all present: "YOU WILL FOLLOW THE RULES." When it passes you realize that your inventory is now empty.
You have received 2 tbsp Hershey's special dark hot fudge topping.

    NASTALYA VANDERBRAUM
Leave and explore: You find yourself in what appears to be an ordinary upper-class suburb. Some houses are in pristine condition, while others--such as the one you just left--have not fared so well. To your east are cliffs that drop sharply to the ocean; to the north, west, and south are more suburb. Most of the streets look about the same.

    THE CARDINAL
Continue toward statues: You finally arrive. The statues of the two women are exactly the same as they were when Jim and Maria arrived, although their coin tributes have disappeared. The Casino lies just north.
You have received a fishing hook.

    NICKI DURANTE
Follow Ted: You do, though he doesn't seem to really be going anywhere.
Form alliance with Ted: You think this is probably not a good idea.
    Form alliance with Trace: Pending.

    GAMBLER TRACE BELLAMY
Follow Ted: Again, you follow him all of nowhere.
Steer Ted: This would work quite well if you were moving.
Shut out feeling: You do so, in the process rejecting an alliance with Nicki. How very rude.
    You have received a pail.

    You...won?
You feel a sudden thrill rush through you. Of course, that's silly, you need to have been playing someone else to really win, but you can't shake the thought. How exhilarating!
You find yourself scanning the tables, your mind reeling with any excuse to pick up another abandoned game, but nothing else around you seems to be working, or is far enough along for you to jump in.
You wander farther into the casino to find more ways to gamble.

Ted sheepishly wipes saliva from his chin. He looks at Tatiana and--

    "YOU WILL FOLLOW THE RULES."

Rules? What rules? And why do Ted's pockets feel so much lighter? He digs around in his inventory for some explanation. He grasps onto the first thing he finds.

It's...some kind of brown goop? Ted doesn't remember having this. He puts it back and reaches for something, anything else. Nothing. Everything is gone! Even...even the flame-broiled beef patty smothered lovingly with BBQ sauce and topped with light, crispy onion rings all on...on...sob...a seasame seed bun! *sniff*

Okay, Ted, pull yourself together. Now is not the time to get sentimental over food that was rotting in the ocean and was never going to be put anywhere near anything resembling a human mouth, no matter HOW tragic such a loss may be. Now is the time to focus on the goal. Revenge will be had on the hidden voices and their arbitrary rules, but first things first. If we are to beat them at their own game, we must find out all we can about the playing field...and our fellow players. The new people said something about going eastward; LET'S GOOOOO!

    ....Um, I said, LET'S GOOOO!

Ted stares at Tatiana and the Frenchman expectantly, but they only stare back. The Frenchman seems to be trying to steer him, but without actually moving himself. Wh...why would they be waiting on Ted? Didn't HE just join THEM?

Suddenly, it clicks: these guys are exactly like puppies. Little tiny newly-adopted puppies. In a strange place they don't understand, scared but friendly, looking for direction from whomever can give it to them. Oh my god they are adorable! Ted could just eat them right up, yes he could, they aw sho cuh-yute, yesh they aw! Who'sh a good widdle civilian? WHO'S a good widdle civilian? You are! You are! D'awww.

Well, let's get these guys taken care of. Before setting out, Ted considers that maybe the voices aren't such TOTAL dicks that they expect him to follow rules he's never had the chance to read. He suspects that they probably are, though. Nonetheless, it might be wise to keep a lookout for anything that looks like a rulebook, or one of those "Welcome to the Pool, no running" signs. Also mountain lions, or other things that might try to eat the little helpless puppies. They are Ted's little adorable baby muffins and he alone has permission to eat them right up, and even then only figuratively.

    "EYES OPEN."

Six eyes are better than two. Situational awareness is important.

Ted leads the way eastward, motioning for Tatiana and the Frenchmen to follow. He tries to keep an eye on them, while also looking out for rulebooks and mountain lions.

    >Well the strange man has apparently headed off in the direction you wanted him to go with minimal prompting. You'd consider this a success, but now he's giving you a look of Condensation rather than Suspicion. 1) You attempt to read Ted's body language and motivations, but you suspect that this won't work.

Regardless, you 2) continue to follow (take lead?) Ted and 3) keep an eye out for potential threats._

Drink energy drink: It's delicious, and you feel much more energized.
Read journal: You open the journal and find that about half of it has been left empty. You flip to the beginning and read.
"May 15: Business is going well. Glad to be managing after Ron's disappearance. Hopefully he is found soon. Though I hope I won't have to step down if he is."
The next few entries only read "Business as usual." Then,
"June 11: Put in the Goddess statues today. Hope this makes them happy & brings in more business. A few people have been wary of the casino lately. Then why don't they leave?"
The next few pages are just hastily scribbled charts and calculations. Then,
"July 2: Business is great!! People losing money left and right this week. Lady Misfortune must love me. Goddamn, I hope Ron never comes back."
    There are more entries still.

    JIM
Wander: You wander more towards the middle of the room and find several more slot machines and a roulette table. The roulette wheel is slowly spinning, and the slot machines blink and beep enticingly.

    TED
Lead eastward: You head eastward through the grass, toward the dirt path.
Keep an eye on them: Well, they're behind you. It's a bit difficult.
Look out: You don't find a rulebook, but you do find a book of jokes lodged in the dirt.
    You have received 6 coins.

    NASTALYA VANDERBRAUM
Knock on door: You knock. Nobody answers.
Break in: You throw all your weight at the door, but this seems to be the strongest door in existence. Or there might be stuff piled on the other side.

    THE CARDINAL
Offer barbecue cookbook: You place the cookbook on the statue's base. You feel nice.
Enter casino: You enter the casino. Rows of slot machines lie before you. You can hear Jim in the back of the room looking for ways to gamble.
You have received 1 tbsp seedless black raspberry jam.

    NICKI DURANTE
    Skipped. (You follow Ted.)

    GAMBLER TRACE BELLAMY
Read Ted's motivations: You were right. This didn't work.

Keep an eye out for threats: You do, but this stretch of grass seems pretty much harmless.

"How strange. I wonder if this Ron kept a similar journal somewhere", Maria mutters to herself. She leans back to go through in her head what she just read. After a moment she decides to walk around a bit as well and takes a more closer glance around the room picking up anything useful before returning to the book.

"I do wonder where the author of this thing is", Maria speaks out loud to no one in particular and continues to read the journal.
